Abstract

A study on ethnic utilization of aquatic macrophytes was carried out at native market in Sarawak. 26 species were identified in this study where most of the species are semi-aquatic macrophytes. The species are Limnocharis flava, Polygonum minus, yperus malaccensis, Nelumbo nucifera, Eleocharis dulcis, Neptrmia oleracea, Ipomoea aquatica, Hydrocotyle umbellata, Eichornia crassipes, Roripa nasturtium-aquaticum, Arthyrium esculentum, Stenoch/aena palustris, ephrolepis bisserata, Oenanthe javanica, Portulaca oleracia, Plantago major, Altenanthera sesslis, Colocasia escu/enta and Lycopodium cernuum which is the aquatic fem. There was also marine macrophytes found utilized by Chinese people in Kuching native market for example Laminaria japonica. lban and Bidayuh are the one that traded the aquatic macrophytes in the native market. The aquatic macrophytes on sale are as food item consumed by the local and at the same time as medicinal.
