Abstract
Background of study: Workers who work in standing position for excessively long period of time tend to experience musculoskeletal discomfort, pain and fatigue of the lower limb. While the use of anti-fatigue mat is common among industries which requires their workers to work in prolonged and sustained standing. However, the characteristics of anti-fatigue mats such as the thickness of mats which have the ability to reduce fatigue and discomfort have not been given enough attention. Objectives: The aim of the study is to compare the effects of different thickness (thickness 1: 1 cm and thickness 2: 2 cm) of anti-fatigue mats on musculoskeletal discomfort complaints and fatigue of lower limb among manufacturing operator in a factory at Shah Alam, Selangor. Methodology: An experimental study was conducted among 60 stamping operators in a manufacturing plant who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria set forth in this study. The operators were asked to complete the self-administrated questionnaire before and after being given anti-fatigue mats with different thickness for 2 days for each mats. Result and Discussion: There were negligible correlation between height, weight and age with self-reported fatigue and fatigue of the lower limbs of the respondents based on different of experiment set where the result for all items were the value of r<0.02, p>0.05. However, there were statistically significant difference (p<0.001) were found when comparing between different thickness of anti-fatigue mats in terms of general fatigue and fatigue of the lower limb where the p value for both variables were less than 0.001. Conclusion: Different thickness of anti-fatigue mats had different effects on musculoskeletal discomfort and fatigue among prolonged standing operator at manufacturing plant, Shah Alam, Selangor. Respondents generally reported less fatigue with increasing thickness of anti-fatigue mat. Keyword: Prolong standing, fatigue, thickness of anti-fatigue mats, musculoskeletal discomfort
