Abstract
An evaluation study was carried out from 9th Nov, 87 till 7th Dec, 87 on an intensive 1800 sow piggery in Johor. Amongst the 3 units in this farm, the New Farm performed the best with an extraction rate of 175, average number of pigs weaned per litter 8.4, 20.2 pigs weaned per mated female per year and 10.4% preweaning mortality. The average age at weaning for the three unit is 27 days. For the entire farm, the average number of pigs weaned per sow per year was 17.4 and the extraction rate was 173. 18.3% of 1677 services on the farm (all units) were repeat services. The occurence of repeat services was highest in Old Farm (22%). Other areas of suboptimal -performance that were identified were, high preweaning mortality in Breeding Farm(15.9%) and under usage of boars in all three units. The estimated cost of producing an 80Kg porker from this farm is $186.40 or $2.33 perkg liveweight. Cost of boar service per litter produced was $21.62. The optimum marketing weight for maximum profit calculated for the Singapore market, was found to be 90kg. The extraction rate for all three units is 173 which indicates the farm is performing well.
