Abstract
Nutrition labeling has become one of the important strategies to be implemented due to alarming increase in the prevalence of oveiweight and obesity in adults. The use of nutrition label can help consumers to choose and purchase healthier options of food, which eventually lead to healthier nutrient intakes. Previous studies found that university students used nutrition label the least compared to other age groups. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to compare socio-demographic factors, body weight status, self-efficacy, knowledge, attitude and perception on nutrition label between nutrition label users and non-users in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). A total of 291 university students (41.6% males and 58.4% females) aged 19 to 24 years old from three randomly selected faculties in UPM participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by the university students to obtain information on sociodemographic background, nutrition label use, self-efficacy, nutrition label knowledge, attitude and perception on the benefits of nutrition label. Weight, height, waist circumference and body fat percentage of the university students were measured. Results showed that the prevalence of nutrition label use among university students was 20.6%, with no significant difference between male and female students (i=0.01, p=l.000). One in five of the males (20.7%) and females (20.6%) were nutrition label users. The most read information on nutrition label were fat content (58.4%), followed by carbohydrate including sugar content (57.4%) and total energy content (51.2%). Majority of the students (51.9%) had moderate level of nutrition label knowledge, while 36.1 % of them had low nutrition label knowledge level. Nearly three in four of the students (72.5%) showed moderate level of attitude towards nutrition label and 58.4% showed moderate level of perception on benefits of nutrition label. In term of body weight status, a quarter (25.4%) of the students were overweight and obese, whereas 15.5% of them were underweight. 14.1 % of the students had abdominal obesity while about two in five of the students (39.9%) were in the unhealthy (too high) body fat percentage group. Label users showed significantly higher self-efficacy in using nutrition label, more positive attitude and better perception on benefits of nutrition label as compared to non-users. However, there were no significant difference in sociodemographic factors, body weight status and nutrition label knowledge between label users and non-users. In conclusion, low prevalence of nutrition label use was found among university students in this study. Intervention and health education programs related to nutrition label use should be conducted among university students in order to improve their nutrition label use.
