Abstract

Introduction: This was a research of parasuicide cases in ICU and its association with the methods of parasuicide and the outcome. Objectives: The study was intended to provide information of parasuicide admission to improve preventive measures and strategies to save the victims. Objevtives: The general objective is to determine proportion of parasuicide admissions to ICU Hospital Serdang from July 2008 to June 2013..Methodology: Secondary information of recognized parasuicide patients were obtained from computer record of Hospital Serdang. The proportion of parasuicide patients .were calculated in percentage. The association between each variable was analysed by chi square test using the SPSS program. Results: Overall percentage of parasuicide admission was 0.94%. The most frequently used method of parasuicide was organophosphate poisoning. There was a significant association between ethnicity and organophosphate poisoning which the p value is 0.022. The association between psychiatric history and the outcome of patients was also statistically significant which p value is 0.02. Conclusion: The Indians were more prone to kill themselves by organophosphate poisoning(ingesting pesticide/herbicides). Subjects with psychiatric history were found more successfully end their lives although they were admitted to ICU for treatment. Recommendations: the usage of organophosphate should be well controlled to reduce the misuse of chemical. Public should give more attention to people around them especially those who have psychiatric condition. Appropriate counseling and psychiatric treatment should be given to people in need before the choose to end their lives. Keywords: Parasuicide ,lCU
