Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer in men and third most common cancer in women worldwide. Immunochemical Fecal occult blood test (iFOBT) as screening test to detect earlier stage of CRC to decrease the incidence and mortality of CRC. Objective: To determine the number of patients with positive i-FOBT result in diagnosing CRe. Methods: A retrospective cross section study design was carried out by collecting 535 patients who attended to Serdang Hospital between January 2012 to December 2012 which have done the i-FOBT. By using a proforma, the objectives of this research were extracted from the medical records. Results: There is 29.9% patients with positive i-FOBT result and majority of the age group was from the 59 years old above (46.9%). From the the results, 51.4% were female and 48.6% were male. 58.4% out of the total patients who done the i-FOBT mostly were Malay. For further investigation, 25.2% have done OGDS, 3.2% have done colonoscope and 6.4% have done both of the procedures. The association between drug history and the result of iFOBT is not significant since the p value is 0.316. Besides that, the association between colonoscopy finding with the result of i-FOBT is significant since the p value is 0.001 Finally, based on the calculation it showed that the prevalence of positive i-FOBT was 10%, sensitivity was 100%, specificity was 42%, positive predictive value was 10% and negative predictive value was 100% in detecting colorectal cancer. Conclusion: The prevalence of positive i-FOBT result is low but the test is highly sensitive in detecting the presence of blood in the stool. While, for specificity it is less lightly to detect the specific diseases. Key Words: immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood Test (i-FOBT), colorectal carcinoma (CRC), colonoscope, histopatho1ogicaleamination (HPE).
