Abstract
Introduction: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common medical complaint in our society. Inadequate knowledge about CLBP can affect assessment and treatment on the patients, consequently may further worsen their conditions and functionality. Objective: To determine the differences of knowledge, beliefs and attitudes on chronic low back pain amongst healthcare professionals (HCPs). Methodology: This study was a cross-sectional study done in Hospital Serdang (HS) using convenience sampling. Three validated questionnaires were used in this study, namely, Survey of Chronic Pain Attitudes-Professionals (SPA-Professionals), Attitudes to Back Pain Scale (ABS) and Back Belief Questionnaire (BBQ). A booklet of questionnaires have been distributed to three group of HCPs, namely doctors, physiotherapists and nurses. A total number of 153 HCPs responded to our questionnaire which included 60 doctors, 11 physiotherapists and 82 nurses. Result: Overall, both the doctors and physiotherapists agreed on using psychological approaches in treating patients with CLBP. However, the doctors were found to prefer bed rest than mobilization in order to manage their patient as compared to the physiotherapists. HCPs with longer working experience, were more willing to engage themselves into psychological issue in order to manage their patients compared with those with shorter working experience. Conclusion: The physiotherapists and those HCPs with longer working experience were found to have better knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about CLBP compared to the doctors and nurses.
