Abstract

Introduction: Heavy metal contamination of coastal water constitutes the greatest harm to our protein source especially to marine fish. Yet, very little study had been done to address the risk of heavy metal via fish consumption. Thus, a cross-¬sectional study to determine level of heavy metal in fish and health risk via fish consumption among the general public of Port Dickson was conducted. Objective: This study aims to determine the level of heavy metal in various fish species in the coastal water of Port Dickson and health risks of heavy metal via fish consumption among the general public in Port Dickson Methodology: In this study, marine fish most frequently consumed by the general public of Port Dickson (Mega laps is cordyla, Rastrelliger kanagurta, Selaroides leptolepsis, Clupea jimbriata) were analyzed for Cd, Cr, Pb and Cu. Questionnaire was used in the exposure assessment survey involving 99 respondents to determine presence of health symptoms and fish consumption information. Health risks of heavy metal via fish consumption were determined by using Hazard Quotient (HQ). Results: This study found that the range heavy metal in fish were 0.053-0.096 mg/kg for Cd, 0.59-2.34 mg/kg for Cr, 8.34-12.44 mg/kg for Pb and 1.40-3.21 mg/kg for Cu. The HQ values for all the metals assessed in fish were less than 1 except for Pb. Conclusion: The levels of Cd and Cu in marine fish from Port Dickson were below the limit enforced by Food Regulations 1985; however, Cr and Pb exceeded the limits enforced. The HQ values for all metals assessed were below 1, except for Pb. Further health risk assessment on staple foodstuffs consumed by Malaysian should be conducted to determine the overall health risks of heavy metal via dietary exposure.
