Abstract

Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. Health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or possibly years later. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was carried out among Malay preschool children in Shah Alam and Hulu L.angat, Selangor. A total of 50 preschool children aged 5- 6 years old from preschools located in Shah Alam were selected as the exposed group. while 50 preschool children located in Hulu Langat were selected as comparative group. A set of questionnaire adopted from The American Thoracic Society was used to obtain the background information, exposure history and respiratory symptoms. MM-SP004 Tabletop Portable Spirometer was used to conduct lung function test among the children. IAQ parameters obtained includes indoor concentration of particulate matter (PM). Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (COz), temperature, air velocity (AV) and relative humidity. Results: Results 95% CI= 1.187-5.970). Results also show significant associations between PMlo and VOCs with FEV0/0 (PR=5.55, 95% CI= 2.189-14.07). (PR=6.15. 95% C1= 2.565-14.73). There were also significant associations between PMlo with cough, phlegm and chest tightness (PR-5.25, 95% C1= 1.12-24.6), (PR=2.63, 95% C1- 1.09-6.31) and (PR=1.63, 95% CI= 1.40-1.91). Conclusion: The finding concluded that exposures to poor 1AQ might increase the risk of getting lung function abnormality and respiratory problems anlong study respondents.
