Abstract
Background: Variety farm activities and tools usage increase the probability of hazard exposure and accident occurrence. Although there is evidence that recorded data accident can be obtained, there is little information of under reporting cases of accident especially in rural setting of agricultural sectors in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was done among 162 farm workers in 3 selected agricultural sectors in Malaysia. The workers involved in this study randomly selected from various type of work task such as from soil preparation to seeding, cultivating, pruning, tapping, crop selection, harvesting, packing and transporting. Objective: The goal of the study was to determine the prevalence of under reporting cases of occupational injuries in the selected sectors and factors related with the occurrence of the reporting trend. Methods: By adopting cluster sampling method with the participation of 162 respondents from three sectors of rubber, pineapple and vegetable plantation, the data was collected through interview session using a self constructed questionnaire to determine accidents occurrence, reporting behavior, type of common accidents occurs as well as the possible causal factors for under reporting cases. Secondary data obtained from department of occupational safety and health (DOSH) was used to determine recent distribution and trend of accidents. The accident rate and non-reported rate was determined for every 1000 employee respectively. The estimation of non reporting rate was determined by using similar formula based on Global estimate of occupational accidents by Hamalainen et al., (2006). Results: 56.1% of the respondent reported having injuries or accidents during working hour for the last 12 months. While 61.54% out of them claim that all accidents occurs were reported and the other 38.4% claimed that their accidents were not reported with the accident rate of 131.5 per 1000 employees and non reported rate of 78.9 per 1000 employees. The prevalence of possible causal factors of non reporting occurrence obtain are lack in safety reporting system with 47.8 % followed by lack in safety management system 23.9% and lack in safety training 17.4% though after further tested indicate no the occurrence of under reporting cases of accidents in agricultural sectors in Malaysia especially in those three sectors that we study that is pineapple, rubber and vegetable sectors. Keywords: Accidents, under reporting, farm workers, causal factors, Malaysia
