Abstract
Algae is a natural source of bioactive compounds such as the phenolic compounds content, fatty acids, amino acids, and carotenoids. Most of them have an antiviral activity, antimicrobial and the most interesting compound is an antioxidant which will be potential for the human benefit. Algae also can give a benefit as part of supplements in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Thus, this study characterizes the bioactive compounds in terms of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity from Chlorella sp. using Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction (UAE) compared with conventional extraction. Different solvents were used in order to obtain these bioactive compounds. Values of Total Phenolic Content (TPC) obtained from Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction using methanol gives 10.53 mg/g GAE compared to ethanol (9.89 mg/g GAE) and distilled water (2.95 mg/g GAE) while in conventional extraction, the highest value of TPC was obtained when using methanol as a solvent (9.17 mg/g GAE). The values of antioxidant activities are also higher when using Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction which are 66.3% using ethanol as a solvent, 48.9% using methanol and 20.1% using distilled water compared to conventional extraction which shows the highest values of antioxidant activity obtained at 46.4% when using methanol as a solvent. Extracts using Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction gives the highest values of both total phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared with conventional extraction.
