Abstract

Project paper (B.S.(Environmental & Occupational Health)) – Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2014. Introduction: Noise is defined as unwanted sound and can be nuisance in disturbance and loss of enjoyment of life, loss of sleep and fatigues. Noise can interfere with verbal communication and affect performance with a strong evidence base linking it to an important health outcome including stress, sleep disturbance and hypertension. There important health outcome including stress, sleep disturbance and hypertension. There are several noise factors that influence sleeping are the level of noise, fluctuations, number of exposures, type, time and information content Objectives: To determine the association between occupational noise exposure with stress level and sleep disturbance level among workers at manufacturing factory in Selangor. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out among workers in a manufacturing factory in Selangor. One hundred workers were selected to participate in this study. The response rate was 80%. A total of 80 workers has been selected based on exposed to high level of noise that exceeds 85dB. The study instrument were used in data collection is Sound Level Meter (SLM) to measured work place noise exposure and Noise dosimeter to determine the personal noise exposure. A standardised questionnaire used for stress was O'Donnell Personal Stress Inventory and Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) for psychosocial. While, for sleep disturbance Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to measure sleep quality during previous month and to discriminate between good and poor sleepers. The data analysis of this study was done by using SPSS Version 2 1 .0 software. Result: The results showed that there was a significant association between stress level and sleep disturbance. However, only psychosocial factor was significantly associated with stress level and sleep disturbance level. There were several elements was significant such predictability (p=0.013), role clarity (p=0.005). quality of leadership (p=0.002), work family contlict (p=0.012) and tempo &work pace (p=0.004). Conclusion: Only psychosocial and socio-demographic was found significantly contributed with stress level and sleep disturbance level instead of noise exposure level and work characterization via multiple logistic regression. Keyword: Occupational noise, psycltosocial factors, stress, sleep disturbance.
