Abstract

Plants are highly used for development of new drug products for cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Herbal cosmetics are the products in which herbs are used in crude or extract form. It becomes burgeoning with consumers perceive them as better and safer products. Oil from rosehip, olive and jojoba were well known for its superb antioxidant properties and for skin softening. However, there is no specific phytochemicals characteristics from tropical fruit reported. This study was undertaken to screening on properties of oil extracted from Rambai and Cempedak seeds. Oil yield from the seeds was 11% and 1.91% for Rambai and Cempedak respectively. The oils were rich in phenolic acids which yielded 23.16 mg GAE/g for Rambai and 34.03 mg GAE/g for Cempedak. Gas liquid chromatography revealed that the major unsaturated fatty acids was oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids while the main saturated fatty acid was palmitic, palmitoleic and stearic acids. The main fatty acids of crude oil were C18:2 n-6 (12.92%), C18:3 n-3 (38.62%), C18:1 n-9 (32.43%), and C16:0 (12%) for Rambai and Cempedak were C18:2 n-6 (43.37%), C18:3 n-3 (5.06%), C18:1 n-9 (3.38%), and C16:0 (28.7%) respectively. Rambai contained 5.895 mg/g β-sitosterol, 1.283 mg/g squalene, and 0.067 mg/g vitamin E. While, Cempedak are 23.99 mg/g β-sitosterol, 1.39 mg/g squalene, and 0.12 mg/g vitamin E. It is found that Rambai seed oil contained high composition of essential fatty acids compared to Cempedak as it is mainly composed of linolenic acid which is the most frequently used fatty acid in cosmetic products which benefit the skin. Therefore, Rambai seed oil has been chosen for development of cosmeceutical cream as it can consider as the best seed oil when compared to Cempedak
