Abstract

Project paper (B.Sc.(Environmental & Occupational Health)) - Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2014. Introduction: Nurses are the group of occupants that have high risk in developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). However, there are only a few studies relating shoe comfort as a risk factor of musculoskeletal disorders among nurses. This study is to determine the workload and distribution of time for each workload of nurses. This research is also to identify the types and characteristics of shoes preferred by the nurses and to identify the MSD complains as well as the relation to working experience. This research is also to identify the association between shoe characteristics with comfort. Method: 200 nurses were selected from government hospital in Kajang, Selangor. Observation was made to identify the shoes used by the nurses and the workload of nurses were also observed. Nordic Questionnaires were given to the nurses to answer regarding shoe comfort and also musculoskeletal disorders complaints. Result: The results shows that nurses spent most of their working time with walking. The type of shoe that nurses prefer is fully covered shoes which have features such as heel height between 0.7-1.4 inches, with arch support and soft sole on a 3-layered soft material foot bed. The pattern depth on the shoe base should be at least 4 mm to suit with the comfort preference of nurses. The highest complaints of work related MSD are at the lower back, upper back, ankle, neck and shoulder. Results show that uncomfortable shoe shows a significant association with being the risk factor of MSD among nurses. However, the association of work experience with the MSD complaints is not significant. Conclusion: The shoe preferred and can be considered as a comfortable shoe for nurses is a fully covered shoe. Uncomfortable shoe can develop MSD among nurses. The highest complain is lower back pain. Working experience is not a major risk factor for MSD among nurses. Keywords : Shoe comfort, nurses, musculoskeletal disorders
