Abstract

The volatilization of ammonia gas in the agricultural sector needs to be considered mainly in flood paddy systems to increase yields and productivity economically and reduce losses. However, in Malaysia, no research has done to measure how much ammonia gas is losses, including nitrogen fertilizers in flooded paddy fields. It is important to monitor the concentration of ammonia because it will give adverse effect to human, animal and environment. The NH3 volatilization to the atmosphere can cause a problem to human, animal and environment. Available ammonia detectors and sensor thresholds sold at very highest prices. In this study, a simple tool for modelling ammonia gas at low in a flooded rice system is developed based on the passive sampler and ammonia-based sensor. The sampler performance was predicted theoretically and tested in a wind tunnel to ensure it works effectively. The effective area is an important information that is needed and used in calculation of the amount of NH3 trapped by the passive sampler. The optimal placement of bearing to ensure stability of the sampler and to allow ease of rotation at minimal torque is at centre of gravity of the device. Performance of coated acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plates in trapping NH3 is similar to stainless steel and glass plates.
