Abstract
As the world population increase, with urbanization moving rapidly, people tend to depend on food production from the rural area. Urban agriculture itself able to provide enough food demand for the urban population if it is practiced correctly. Rooftop farming is one example of urban agricultural practices which grows, raises, processes, and distributes agricultural produce within the cities and towns. Nevertheless, challenges in rooftop farming include limited lateral spaces, high winds, extremely high temperatures, illiterate farm managers, and high operational expenditure of the farm. An unmanaged rooftop farm environment may lead to frustration. In this paper, a smart environmental monitoring system of a rooftop farm using the Internet of Things (IoT) to facilitate farm management is presented. The method of smart monitoring focuses on the measurement of climate conditions, which are temperature, humidity, and light intensity. If any abnormal activities occur, the system gives an alert to the farm managers. These sensors are connected to a microcontroller, which is programmed to monitor the farm environmental conditions. It also activates actuators such as fan when needed. The management of the rooftop farm can be simplified and improved by the system application. These benefits would encourage more people to practice rooftop farming for sustainable food production
