Abstract

Introduction: Laboratories are considered as one of the high-risk areas in the Higher Educational Institutions. In the university lab, the students are being exposed to different types of hazards while using chemicals and handling different types of apparatus and equipment, which could expose them to the risk of injury. Objective: Thus, this study was designed to determine the usability of a mobile app developed, which provides a platform for improving knowledge and awareness and serves as incident notification of safety and health among students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 2020, where a total of 147 respondents from five different faculties of Universiti Putra Malaysia was involved by using convenient sampling strategy. A mobile app known as SafeLab was developed. It is a tool for collecting the respondents' socio-demographic information and testing the usability of the app via questionnaire. Socio-demographic information was obtained through the registration process. The Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) was adopted for this study. Results and Discussion: The results showed that most of the respondents were female (53.1%), Malay (88.4%), 23 years old (71.4%), students from Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (35.4%), and 4th year students (72.1%). As overall, a total of 97.3% of the respondents agreed to satisfied with the app. There was no association between all socio-demographic of the respondents except for faculty and the usefulness of the app (r = -0.245, p<0.05). Conclusion: The result of usability test indicated that the SafeLab app developed has room for further improvisation in order to enhance potential for practical application in the laboratory in the laboratory of Higher Educational Institution. Keywords: Usability, Incident Notification, Mobile Application, Safety and Health.
