Abstract
Introduction: Safety issues are not only a concern in high-risks industries but also in education sectors such as teaching laboratory where chemical is used daily for experimental purpose. The uses of chemical in laboratory expose students and laboratory staffs to chemical risk. Many accidents have been reported in Malaysian teaching laboratory related to poor management and handling of chemicals. As an alternative to reduce accidents, the Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) is implemented. A proper knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) on OSH also plays important role in reducing accidents at workplace. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice levelson occupational safety and health among laboratory workers in OSHMS certified and non-certified public universities in Malaysia. Methodology: A cross sectional survey was conducted among 120 laboratory staffs in two OSHMS certified and two noncertified Public Universities in Malaysia. A self-administered questionnaire which was adapted from previous studies and published guidelines related to occupational safety and health was used to assess the respondents’ KAP on OSH. Results: This study found that 76% (n=38) of laboratory workers in OSHMS certified universities have high knowledge, 94% (n=47) have positive attitude, and 88% (n=44) have good practice on OSH. While in OSHMS non-certified universities, 70% (n=49) of the respondents have high knowledge, 97.1% (n=68) have positive attitude and 81.4% (n=57) have good practice on OSH. In terms of knowledge and attitude, there was no significant difference found between respondents in OSHMS-certified and noncertified universities. While, there was a significant difference in the practice level and OSHMS certification. A significant association was found between knowledge level with age and education level. Only gender was significantly associated with attitude level. Conclusion: Regardless of OSHMS certification, a high KAP level on OSH was demonstrated among the laboratory workers in Malaysian public universities. Therefore, it is important to implement a safety training in order to maintain a good KAP on OSH among the laboratory workers Keywords: Knowledge Attitude Practice (KAP), Occupational Safety and Health, OSHMS Certification, Laboratory Workers, Public Universities.
