Abstract

Introduction: Calories from food may increase the risk of obesity and cardiometabolic disease and widespread of obesity among healthcare professional may hamper their health promotion efforts. This purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with energy intake among employees in healthcare facilities in Federal Territories in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Putrajaya. Energy intake was collected using 3-days 24-hour dietary recall. Weight, height, and body composition (waist circumference and body fat percentage) were measured using calibrated tools and mental health status was assessed using Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Results: A total of 122 subjects participated in this study. A total of 103 (84.4%) had an inadequate energy intake while 19 (15.6%) subjects had an adequate energy intake. Of the 122 subjects, 52 (42.6%) subjects were among the normal reporter in reporting their energy intake. Significant associations were found between body composition and body mass index (BMI) with energy intake (p<0.05) and no associations were found between sociodemographic characteristics and mental health status with energy intake. Conclusion: This finding suggests that body composition and BMI are associated with energy intake. Therefore, knowledge-based intervention programmes among employees are needed to increase the level of knowledge in regard to energy intake to assist in obesity prevention.
