Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) happens during pregnancy resolves which usually following delivery. However, women with history of GDM are at a high risk of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM).Thus, this study aimed was to determine and compare the personal characteristics and nutritional status between women with and without the history of GDM in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This cross-sectional study recruited 83 childbearing women and from that, 25 (30%) had GDM and the remaining of 58 (69.8%) women have no history of GDM. Personal characteristics (sociodemographic characteristics and reproductive history) and nutritional status (anthropometry measurements) were assessed using self-administered questionnaire and dietary intake was assessed by Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The proportion of women with (HxGDM) and without history of GDM (ºHxGDM) were 30% and 69.8%.(68%) of women with history of GDM had family history of diabetes mellitus than women without history of GDM (37.9%) [X²=8.430, p=0.015]. All women with history of GDM (100%) had <8.5 mmol/L for maternal 2-hour 75g OGTT [X²=83, p=0.000]. Women with history of GDM had significantly higher of gestational weight gain (GWG) [HxGDM: M=11.99, SD =7.19 vs. ºHxGDM: M= 7.48, SD=2.90; t=3.022, p =0.003], higher postpartum weight retention [U=507.00,p=0.030] , higher fat intake [HxGDM: M=56.83, SD =22.81 vs. ºHxGDM: M= 41.8, SD=16.79; t=2.246, p =0.027] and lower fibre intake [HxGDM: M=9.77 , SD =7.34 vs. ºHxGDM: M= 14.54 , SD=12.65 ; t=2.153, p =0.034] than women without history of GDM. There were significant differences in personal characteristics (family history of diabetes and maternal 2-hour 75g OGTT) and nutritional status (GWG, post-partum weight retention, total fat and fiber intake) between women with and without history of GDM. Therefore, women with history of GDM were more likely to present with certain characteristics that put them at high risk than those without history of GDM.
