Abstract

Introduction: Malaysia is blessed with abundant of water resources and adequate rainfalls every year. The government has issued that the Malaysia’s tap water is not only clean but safe to be consume directly from the tap. However, quality of drinking water is still one of the concern of consumers today. Objectives: This study aims to determine public perception of their drinking water quality from their residential house by determining the level of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) and assessing the association between the level of KAP. Other than that, the list of associated drinking water problems were also obtained for study. Methodology: A cross sectional study with 222 total respondents from Klang Valley (Malaysia) were involved in this study. Perception of drinking water quality was collected through a questionnaire survey. Results and Discussion: Most of the respondents (63%) have a good knowledge scores (score > 70%) for drinking water management but only 4.95% of the respondents have a good positive attitude (score > 70%) toward their drinking water quality. Majority of respondents (99.1%) reported an average score between medium to good score for practice related to drinking water management at their house. About 84.2% of the respondents believed that taking additional drinking water treatment such as having water filter system helps in improving their drinking water quality. Chi-Square test revealed that there is no association between knowledge level and level of positive attitude or level of practice related to drinking water quality. It was reported that the highest occurrence of drinking water problems were low water pressure and unforeseen water disruption with problems related to odour, colour and taste were lesser to occurred. Conclusion: The results of the study will be able to provide the data on drinking water quality based on consumer perceptions allowing the authorities to improve drinking water management especially in Klang Valley area.
