Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge, awareness and perception (KAP) level of hazardous chemical waste pollution among university students in Malaysia. Purposive and convenience sampling was used to identify the respondents. The total number of respondents included in this study was N=185. The data were collected using questionnaire and analysed using SPSS version 25.0. This study shows majority of the undergraduate students of UPM have high level of knowledge (80.5%), awareness (73.5%) and perception (72.4%). The knowledge level has no significant difference and no significant relationship between the socio-demographic variables and also between sciences and non-sciences students. The awareness level was significantly higher among students aged 20-23 years old with the mean ± SD score of 4.29±0.44 (p=0.019). The perception level was higher among first year students (4.41±0.48, p=0.038), students with CGPA of 3.75 and above (4.32±0.49, p=0.030) and students from chemistry study program (4.64±0.38, p=0.024). The awareness (p=0.051) and perception (p=0.011) level were significantly higher among sciences students with the mean score of 4.34 (0.47), as compared to non-sciences students 4.36 (0.47). This study revealed that Malay students were 0.25 more likely to have high awareness and students from science program were 2.60 more likely to have high perception compare to non-sciences students. This study shows poor significant correlation between knowledge and awareness level (r=0.200, p=0.006), and fair significant correlation between awareness and perception level (r=0.480, p<0.001). In conclusion the undergraduate students of UPM generally had a good KAP level about hazardous chemical waste pollution. Keywords: Hazardous waste, knowledge, awareness, perception
