Abstract
Introduction: Agriculture sector such as paddy farming depends on the usage of fertilizers and pesticides to grow healthy and produce a lot of crop yield. Some pesticides may disperse and accumulated in the air may possessed risk through inhalation, ingestion and dermal absorption to the farmers whom involved in spraying and mixing. Objective: The aim of this study is to quantify the concentration of isoprothiolane, buprofezin, chloratraniliprole and pymetrozine in blood serum samples and associate the reported health symptoms among paddy farmers. Methodology: Cross sectional study was carried out in Tanjung Karang, Selangor. A total of 86 questionnaires were distributed to obtain farmers’ health symptoms. QuEChERS method (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) was used for sample extraction then analysis of blood serum samples was done using Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The association of pesticides compounds and self-reported health symptoms was determined using statistical analysis. Results and discussion: The result showed that the mean concentrations of isoprothiolane, chlorantraniliprole, pymetrozine and buprofezin were 451.83 ngmL−1, 268.18 ngmL−1, 102.86 ngmL−1 and less than limit of quantification (LOQ), respectively. Reported health symptoms shows significant relation to pesticide compounds (isoprothiolane and chlorantraniliprole). There may be contributing factors that affect the self-reported health symptoms such as work duration per years, work duration per week, work duration per hours, level of education and smoking status of farmers. Conclusion: The output of this study provides method that can estimate the concentration of pesticides exposed in human and this study suggest that occupational exposure of pesticides may lead to occurrence of pesticides in blood serum samples of farmers. This is because the pesticides present in the blood serum are in a significant amount. Keywords: Pesticides, blood serum, UHPLC-MS/MS, QuEChERS, paddy farming
