Abstract

Frailty usually associated with aging however, people are undergo haemodialysis treatment are also at risk of getting frail. Thus, study aimed to determine the associations between socio-demographic characteristics, social support, protein intake, physical activity and depression with frailty among haemodialysis patients in selected dialysis centres in Selangor, Malaysia. This was a cross-sectional study which involved 54 haemodialysis patients who are 18 years old and above. Socio-demographic characteristics information were obtained using self-developed questionnaire. Social support of patients were assessed based on Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire while physical activity level of patients will be assessed using International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Protein intake of patients will be determined using 2-day 24-hour diet recall. For depression, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess patients’ depression level. Frailty status was determined using Frailty Phenotype Questionnaire (FPQ). The distribution of pre-frail and frail was 57.4% and 37.0% respectively. This study found out that frailty was statistically significant associated with socio-demographic characteristic (age), protein intake and depression with p<0.05. Other characteristics of socio-demographics, social support and physical activity were not associated with frailty. Overall, high proportion of haemodialysis patients who were pre-frail and frail, deserve attentions from relevant authorities in order to improve the quality of life and decrease the risk of falls and fractures that can cause mortality. Protein intake and depression among haemodialysis patients also should be concerned as these factors were associated with frailty among haemodialysis patients.
