Abstract

Dialysis patients with low muscle strength have increased mortality risk. Hence, this study aimed to determine the muscle strength and its associated factors among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients at selected government hospitals. This study was a combination study of primary and secondary data of cross-sectional study among PD patients. Socio-demographic background was obtained through an interviewer-administered questionnaire, medical history and biochemical data retrieved from patient’s medical record. Height, weight, skinfold, mid-upper arm circumferences (MUAC) and lean body mass (LBM) were measured. Dietary intake was assessed using 3 days diet recall. Muscle strength was measured using Jamar handgrip dynamometer [handgrip strength (HGS)]. A total of 104 patients included in this study, 26 was primary data from Hospital Serdang and Hospital Kuala Lumpur, meanwhile, 78 was secondary data from Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah. A total of 31.7 % (n=33) PD patients had low handgrip strength. There was significant association between HGS with age (r= -0.257, p=0.009), gender (χ2=5.593, p=0.018), LBM (r=0.303, p=0.002), MUAC (r=0.252, p=0.010), serum albumin (r=0.265, p=0.006), serum creatinine (r=0.212, p=0.030), and energy intake (r=0.251, p=0.017). There are several factors found to be associated with HGS among PD patients in these centres. Hence, HGS should be regularly assessed in PD patients as it can help in monitoring nutritional status. Keywords: Peritoneal dialysis, mid-upper arm circumferences, lean body mass, handgrip strength
