Abstract
Introduction: Food waste management is a conversion of food waste into useful resources such as fertilizer or compost, generating electricity from food waste or making alternative fuel from food waste, landfill disposal is the least preferred. Each year, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food waste were produced. Volume of food waste produced keep increasing every year. In 2017, according to Solid Waste Corporation of Malaysia, Malaysian were produced about 38,000 tons of waste per day and 15,000 tons of it was food waste. Moreover, a few studies were conducted related to food waste which resulting negative repercussion on health, economy and environment. Objective: To determine the knowledge, attitude and practice on food waste management among food vendors in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. Methodology: Universal sampling has been conducted to choose the study sample. In this study, modified questionnaire from previous studies was distributed through online to 37 food vendors. Fisher’s Exact test was applied to determine the association among variables. Results and Discussions: Overall, food vendors in UPM, Serdang had obtained moderate level on knowledge, attitude and practice on food waste management. The results highlighted that food waste management training attendance has a significant association with attitude level on food waste management (p<0.05, p=0.048). Furthermore, a significant association between age and practice on food waste management has also been identified (p<0.05, p=0.034). Conclusion: The information of this study has indicated that food waste management training program is needed. Hence, UPM could cooperate with organizations related to food waste in order to improve food waste management. Keywords: knowledge, attitude, practice, food waste management, food vendors
