Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer in Malaysia after breast cancer. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of CRC among undergraduate students of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. An online survey was conducted for respondents to complete the self-administered questionnaire, Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), short-form International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Cancer Awareness Questionnaire (CAQ). The total number of students recruited was 74 students with 81.1% were female and 18.9% were male with age range of 19 to 25 years old and mean age of 21.28 ± 1.13 years. Based on the total score of KAP comparison, 83.8% had a good knowledge, 74% good attitude score while 78.4% had a poor preventive practice score. Among the respondents, 48.6% had a family history of cancer from both immediate and extended family. Next, most of the respondents had normal Body Mass Index classification and according to FFQ, most of the respondents had an excessive intake of meat and meat products and fast food above recommendation with inadequate intake of vegetables and fruits. Only 27.0% of respondents had high physical activity levels while 35.1% and 37.8% of respondents had moderate and low physical activity level respectively. In this study, intake of vegetables, fruits and meat were associated with knowledge, attitude or practice of CRC. Therefore, further study and prevention actions should be done to improve knowledge, attitude and practice among undergraduate students in lower the risk of mortality and morbidity.
