Abstract
Globally, sodium consumption above the reference level of 2.0 g per day had attributed to 1.65 million annual cardiovascular deaths. Population knowledge, attitudes, and practices are also assumed to affect the intake of salt and, fortunately, are considered modifiable mediating factors that are amenable to change. Thus, this study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) on salt intake among undergraduate students and the associated factors which may affect the KAP. A total of 57 undergraduate students with a mean age of 21.18 ± 0.984 participated in this cross-sectional study consisting of 13 males (22.8%) and 44 females (77.2%). Sociodemographic data, lifestyle characteristics, personal and family medical history, and anthropometric data of height and weight were obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Salt intakes were estimated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) consisting of 104 high salt content food items, while KAP was determined using well-validated questionnaires adapted from the Malaysian Community Salt Survey (MyCoSS). The mean salt intake among respondents was 10.2 ± 7.16 g/day exceeded the WHO recommendation of 5g/day. The majority of the respondents were aware that high salt intake could cause serious health problems, with hypertension (96.5%) was the most known health risk. However, most respondents perceived that they consumed just the right amount of salt (68.4%), and about 63.2% of the participants controlled their salt intake regularly. For those who managed their salt intake regularly, the most practice implemented was avoiding or minimizing consumption of processed foods. Nevertheless, no significant association was reported between the socio-demographic background (except ethnicity), lifestyle characteristics, medical characteristics, and nutritional status with KAP related to salt intake. Thus, future research with students from other universities is encouraged to accurately represent the Malaysian university populations of KAP on salt intake. Keywords: salt, knowledge, attitude, practice, food frequency questionnaire
