Abstract

Introduction: Over the course of this century, one of the most common public health problems is hypertension and it has shift global epidemiology from a communicable disease to a noncommunicable one. In Malaysia, there are limited studies that have focused on the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of hypertension among undergraduate students. Hence, the objectives of this study were to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of hypertension among undergraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Method: A cross-sectional study was done among 58 students from Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Bilingual self-administered online questionnaires consist of anthropometric measurements, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), The Fast Alcohol Screening Test (FAST), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were used in this study. Result: A total of 72.4% (n=42) of the respondent have a good knowledge, 81.0% (n=47) have positive attitude and 50% (n=29) have good practice towards hypertension. Factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and household income, BMI, sodium intake, family history of hypertension and comorbidities diseases, smoking status, alcohol consumption and physical activity level was not significantly associated with the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice towards hypertension. Conclusion: Majority of the participants have a good level of knowledge, attitude, and practice towards hypertension.
