Abstract

Introduction: In Malaysia, road crashes are a never-ending problem and continue to increase year by year. Young motorcyclists have been believed to be the group who prone to road accident involvements in Malaysia and it is the most concern issue nowadays. As household incomes becoming to increase, people desire to have their own vehicles. Motorcycles are most likely chosen as daily transportation because they are fuel-efficient and affordable to purchase and maintain. Therefore, young people prefer motorcycles as their mode of transportation in order for them to move from one place to another. Objective: This study aims to determine the riding behaviour among secondary school students in Sri Serdang, Selangor. Methodology: This study is a cross-sectional study that used a simple random sampling method to obtain the sample. The data collection was conducted in two schools which are SMK Seri Serdang and SMK Seri Indah both in Sri Serdang, Selangor. The respondents were given a set of a self-administered Motorcycle Rider Behaviour Questionnaire (MRBQ) containing 59 items that was adapted from previous studies as the research instruments to achieve the objectives of the study. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the mean of MRBQ rating of secondary school students in Sri Serdang students was precaution factor (3.58 ± 0.185), traffic error (2.10 ± 0.155), speeding (1.93 ± 0.100), safety violation (1.84 ± 0.213) and safety equipment (1.74 ± 0.366). The male students have higher crash involvement in both road crashes and near-miss crashes as compared to female students. The traffic error (p < 0.001), safety violation (p < 0.001), speeding (p < 0.001), and safety equipment (p < 0.001) has a significant difference between male and female students. Traffic error and safety equipment factors were the road crash significant predictors among secondary school motorcyclists. Students who had safety violations above the average were 0.370 times more likely to be involved in road crashes, meanwhile, students who had precautions above the average were 2.385 times less likely to be exposed to road crash. Conclusion: This study will provide baseline data to the related organization such as Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) to propose prevention and intervention programs for this specific population. Intervention programs such as motorcycle safety riding should be conducted among secondary school students. Keywords: MRBQ, Riding behaviour, Secondary school students.
