Abstract

Introduction: At present, medical institutions in Malaysia are still inclined towards conventional learning methods, that is, following the traditional setup of face-to-face lectures in a classroom. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has disrupted medical education; therefore accelerating the transformation of traditional learning into technology-aided teaching and learning. There is still a lack of use of augmented reality (AR) in the classroom. Despite the growing interest in AR in clinical medicine and research showing the effectiveness of AR, there is still a lack of study on the intention to use AR in medical learning especially among medical students in UPM. Objective: This study aims to investigate the intention to use AR learning approach, the effects of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intention of the medical students and examine the differential effects of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status among medical students in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study design with a universal sampling method. An estimated 223 samples are targeted out of the population of 528 students. Participants are required to answer a Likert-scale-based questionnaire after watching a demonstration video of AR. The questionnaire consists of 5 sections - section A, sociodemographic background; section B, a video showcasing the use of AR; section C, the usefulness of the application; section D, the ease of use of the application and section E, the intention to use the AR application. Results: A total of 223 responses were considered in this study. It is found that there is no significant association between ethnicity and the behavioural intention of medical students of UPM to use AR in medical learning with a p-value of 0.280. Similarly, there is no significant association between socioeconomic status and the behavioural intention to use AR in medical learning with a p-value of 0.385. There is also no significant association between gender and the behavioural intention of using AR in medical learning with a p-value of 0.627. For perceived ease of use, it is found to have a significant association with the intention to use AR (P = 0.0001, α = 0.05). We also found out that there is a significant association between the perceived ease of use and the behavioural intention to use AR with all p-values <0.0001 (α = 0.05). Conclusion: This study revealed that the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are significantly associated with the behavioural intention of medical students in UPM to use AR in medical learning while no association is noted for gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.
