Abstract
Preterm infants are much more likely to have major clinical problems of extrauterine growth restriction as compared to the other term infants. Adequate early postnatal nutrition is important for preterm neonates to survive. Growth failure during the NICU stay is thought to be caused by feeding and nutrition procedures. To date, research on preterm nutrition in Malaysia does not focus on managing undernutrition and growth development of premature infants. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the factors associated with weight velocities among preterm infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Hospital Pengajar Universiti Putra Malaysia. A retrospective study was conducted among preterm infants in teaching hospital located in Selangor selected through purposive sampling method starting from April till June 2022. The data collection method used in the study was by retrieving the secondary data related to the weight velocities among preterm infants from the hospital medical reports from Record Unit HPUPM. The descriptive and bivariate analysis was used to analyze the expand of preterm nutrition and weight velocities among preterm infants. Based on the analysis, majority of the infants (68.8%) falls under moderate to late preterm with a mean gestational age of 33.22 ± 2.79 weeks at admission. It was found that majority of the infants that were admitted had poor weight gain despite being provided with intensive care and feeding optimization during hospitalization. This shows that the current feeding practices of intensive care unit in terms of preterm infant nutritional management are still lacking specifically in addressing issues on catch-up growth of the infants. The future studies are encouraged to further evaluate the effectiveness of dietitian referral towards growth outcome of preterm infants and to address the issues and challenges in current low rates of dietitian referral in neonatal intensive care unit.
