Abstract

Malnutrition is defined as “the cellular imbalance between the supply of nutrients and energy and the body's demand for them to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific functions''. Appropriate nutrition provision plays a major role in determining the long-term outcomes of NICU patients. This study aims to determine factors associated with risk of malnutrition among Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) patients. The study design used a cross-sectional approach. The study subjects in this study were 29 term and preterm infants admitted to NICU. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Variables of sociodemographic, birth anthropometrics, feeding regimens and clinical characteristics of the NICU patients were retrieved from the secondary data method by reviewing the patient medical files. The malnutrition risk of the infants was measured using Neonatal Nutritional Risk Screening Tool (NNRST). Data was analyzed using univariable and bivariable. Majority of the infants admitted to the NICU were born as term (72.5%) with the mean gestational age of 37 ± 2.72 weeks. There was a significant negative correlation between the birth weight, birth length, and head circumference with the risk of malnutrition (p<0.05). This study also found that most of the NICU population had moderate risk of malnutrition (69%). It was proven that lower energy intake will lead to a higher score of malnutrition risk. It was found that NICU population had a moderate risk of malnutrition during hospitalization and individualized nutrition provision is important to reduce the risk of malnutrition, especially the energy provision.
