Abstract

Malnutrition remains a concern among hospitalized elderly and is associated with adverse outcomes during hospitalization. Mid-upper arm circumference is found to be a useful indicator to identify malnutrition. However, a study regarding this is scarce and outdated among hospitalized elderly in Malaysia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the associations between sociodemographic factors, medical background, anthropometric measurement, dietary intake, nutritional status, and malnutrition among hospitalized elderly in Klang Valley hospitals. A total of 127 hospitalized elderly from Hospital Pengajar Universiti Putra Malaysia (HPUPM), Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), and Hospital Selayang were recruited as the participants. A questionnaire comprised of sociodemographic characteristics, medical background, anthropometry measurement, nutritional status (MNA-SF), dietary intake, and malnutrition (mid-upper arm circumference, <23cm for men and <22 for women) was used. The data was collected through the medical record, face-to-face interviews, and body measurements. IBM SPSS Statistics version 26 was used with a significance level of p<0.05 and Pearson’s correlation was used to analyse the data. The mean age of the participants was 70.85 ± 8.33 years and most of the participants were Malays (67.0%) followed by Chinese and Indian with similar proportion (16.5%). The mean number of comorbidities and BMI was 2.35 ± 1.15 and 25.53 ± 5.93 kg/m2. Based on the total score of MNA-SF, 27.6%, 52.8%, and 19.7% were normal, at risk of malnutrition, and malnourished, respectively. The prevalence of malnutrition or upper body muscle wasting was 10.2%. Age (r=-0.274, p= 0.002), ethnicity (p=0.030), number of comorbidities (r=0.186, p=0.036), BMI (r=0.883, p=0.001), MNA-SF (r=0.515, p=0.001) were significantly associated with malnutrition. In conclusion, malnutrition is present among hospitalized elderly and age, ethnicity, number of comorbidities, BMI, and MNA-SF are associated with the measurement of MUAC. Hence, precautionary actions are needed to enhance recovery and prevent adverse outcomes.
