Abstract

Forward osmosis is the process of spontaneous water diffusion across a semi-permeable forward osrnosis membrane based on the difference in solute concentrations on either side of the semi:permeable mernbrane. This study focus on developing forward osmosis as alternative to concentrate passion fruit juice and to minimal the losses of nutritional properties This study will be studying the effectiveness of increasing concentration of passion fruiii;ulces by alternating the concentrations of the DS and flow rate of fruit juices and DS through the membrane. From the result, it can be concluded that, as the flow rate of solutions and concentration of DS increased, the transmembrane flux and concentration of feed juice increased as well. From this study, the highest increment of passion fruit juice concentration was 10.7 ± 0.14% Brix at 6M DS concentration and flow rate of 2.4 L/min. Nutritional content were retained well by forward osmosis process compared to commercial fruit juices. Moreover, fouling of forward osmosis will also be studied using scanning elechon microscope (SEM), it was concluded that as the concentration and flow rate increased, there will be more particulates accumulate on the surface of membrane and fouling will be more significant. In conclusion, forward osmosis can be an alternative measure to concentrate fruit juices with minimal impact to environment compared to other methods.
