Abstract
Insect growth regulators (IGRs) are insecticides that act on ecdysine and juvenile hormone or as chitin synthesis inhibitor. In this study, application of chitin synthesis inhibitor (flufenoxuron and chlorfluazuron), bacillus thuringiensis, fibronil and cypermethrin may affect the percentage of weevil survival and emergence acording to insecticidal effects. Thus, a laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of IGRs on survival of the palm weevil elaeidobius kamerunicus. Three different concentrations of each treatment were prepared using 200 mL of distilled water. Each concentration of treatment was topically applied with 1 uL of the pesticides onto the dorsum of the prothorax of adult weevil by using an eppendorf 10 uL micropipette. While dipping method was done by randomly taking three spikelets of male inflorescence at anthesis and dipped into each different concentration of treatments. Application of flufenoxuron had less hazardous effects on E. kamerunicus for both bioassays application as there was more than 90% weevil survival and 60% of weevil emergence by seven days after treatment (DAT). Bacillus thuringiensis gave more than 90% weevil survival. Lufenuron also had high weevil survival but the adult emergence was more depressed (24.14%). Chlorfluazuron had more adverse effects on percentage of weevil survival when compared to lufenuron as the chlorfluazuron was toxic but the effects was slow on adult weevil. Application of cypermethrin and fipronil were highly toxic and caused 100% mortality immediately after treatment. It was concluded that flufenoxuron and B.thuringiensis hah high potential as alternative pesticides for pest control in the oil palm plantation as they did not harm the pollinator weevil E. kamerunicus and were less hazardous to the environment.
