Abstract
The flower of Hylocereus undatus or known locally as bawanghua is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is made into healthy soup to relieve cough, moisturize the lung and eliminating the phlegm. Previous study only include one species of Hylocereus flower which was H. undatus and the study reported that the antioxidant ability of H. undatus flower seems attributable to total phenolics which mainly total flavonoid. The objective of the study is to study total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and the total antioxidant activity of two Hylocereus flower which are H.undatus and Hpolyrhizus in 70% ethanol extract and aqueous extract Determination of total phenolic content and total flavonoid content were done by F olin-ciocalteu method and aluminium chloride colourimetric method. The samples were analysed for antioxidant activity using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical scavenging assay. Results showed that 70% ethanol extract obtained the highest value in TPC, TFC, FRAP value and have the lowest ICso value in DPPH radical scavenging activity. In comparison, between two sample which were the flower of H.undatus and H.po/yrhizus, H.undatus flower contained higher TPC, TFC, FRAP and lowest ICso value in both ethanolic and aqueous extract. Analysis of variance showed significant difference at level p<0.05 in TPC in ethanolic and aqueous extract H.undatus flower, significant difference in TFC in 70% ethanol extract of flower H.polyrhizus and H. undatus, and significant difference in antioxidant activity between ethanolic and aqueous extract of both flowers. Pearson correlation analysis showed that TPC has strong positive correlation with TFC, FRAP which indicate that as TPC value increases, TFC and FRAP also increases while TPC has strong negative correlation with ICso as the TPC value increase, ICso decreases which indicates stronger antioxidant activity. This showed that phenolic compounds and flavonoids may be the major contributors to the antioxidant activities in both Hylocereus flowers.
