Abstract

Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is the feeling of pain, ache, injuries or simply, the disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and/or spinal disc, a condition in which the work environment and job performance play a significant role in the disease-causing the condition to worsen or lasts longer. In order to assess MSD, there have been numerous instruments established in the past. The most commonly questionnaire used in Malaysia are Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. Objective: To determine the professional experiences (in using both NMQ and CMDQ), the content validity, and other input and recommendation among the ergonomics experts in Malaysia. To compare the content validity of relevancy and clarity between NMQ and CMDQ. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out where purposive sampling was applied. A total of 13 experts that have at least five years of experience in human factors and ergonomics were contacted via email. The experts were required to assess the relevancy and clarify of the questionnaire usage in the context of the Malaysian working population, including their recommendations, comments on the clarity of each item of the questionnaire. Maintaining the original form of each questionnaire, the content validity for each body part was added. The data were analyzed by using the Content Validity Index (CVI) where indices used were I-CVI, S-CVI/Ave and S-CVI/UA. An independent t-test was used to analyze the experts in agreement, I-CVI, universal agreement and proportion relevance of both questionnaires. Result & Discussion: The result showed no significant mean difference (p<0.05) between the relevancy of Modified NMQ and CMDQ in terms of experts in agreement (10.55±0.53, 10.77±0.71), I-CVI (0.81±0.04, 0.83±0.05), universal agreement (0±0, 0±0) and proportion relevance (0.81±0.38, 0.81±0.37) which indicates that both groups of experts have similar agreement on both questionnaires. However, in terms of clarity, there was a significant mean difference (p<0.05) between the Modified NMQ and CMDQ in terms of experts in agreement (9.67±0.71, 9.81±0.40) and I-CVI (0.74±0.06, 0.83±0.03). Conclusion: Although modified NMQ and CMDQ were deemed to be suitable for application in the context of Malaysian working population as self-administered or interview-assisted questionnaires, there were several comments that were considerably important for improvement. Keywords: content validity, musculoskeletal disorders, questionnaire
