Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common mental health disorder after childbirth, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic. Since PPD is known to have long-term impact on the mother and infants, the role of their social support network is crucial in early recognition of the illness. The study explores the social support system’s awareness on PPD during COVID 19 pandemic. Objective: The objective is to determine the social support networks’ level of knowledge, attitude, and belief about postpartum depression and analyze its sociodemographic factors and exposure to public knowledge in relation to postpartum depression during COVID 19 pandemic in Malaysia. Methodology : This was a cross-sectional study conducted among postpartum women’s social support networks aged 18 years and above in the Klang Valley area (N= 394) . Data was collected using an online google form questionnaire. Result: The Median(IQR) scores on knowledge [10.00 (4.00)], attitude [14.00 (7.00)] and belief [12.00 (4.00)] scales suggest that majority of the respondents have a good level of knowledge (76.4%), positive attitude (66.24%) and belief (84.8%) towards postpartum depression. Married (p=0.025), having a child (p=0.37) and females (p=0.022) were associated with good knowledge towards PPD whereas positive attitudes towards PPD were noted among female respondents (p=0.021), Malay (p=0.034), single (p=0.010) and individuals with no children (p=0.024). There was also a significant association between exposure to public knowledge on PPD with the level of knowledge and attitude on PPD. Conclusion: These results suggest the importance of awareness campaign targeting on general populations even during COVID 19 pandemic, to increase their level of knowledge and to encourage a more positive attitude and belief towards postpartum depression. Keyword: Postpartum depression, knowledge, attitudes, belief, social support networks.
