Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial disease of the sebaceous unit. Although the use of cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, facial masks, and scrubs are useful in managing acne, no study has been conducted to study its association in acne severity. Method: A cross-sectional study, involving 183 medical students in UPM was conducted using a Google form online questionnaire. Sociodemographic factors, skincare technique, type of active ingredients used and perception of skincare on acne severity were collected. Acne severity was graded using the Leeds Revised Acne Grading System and Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale (CASS). Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS v26 and p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Result: 79 students (43.17%) have facial acne only, and 96 students (52.46%) have both facial and truncal acne. Males were found to have more severe front and back acne (p=0.038, p=0.017). Ethnicity was found to associated with truncal acne (p=0.041). Chinese respondents suffered a more severe truncal acne compared to other ethnicities. Facial scrub and facial mask usage were found to be associated with facial acne (p=0.046, p=0.034). Respondents that did not practice the use of facial mask and facial scrub experienced more severe facial acne. However, no significant difference was found between active ingredients content and facial acne severity (p>0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that truncal acne severity is associated with gender and ethnicity while the facial acne severity is associated with the use of facial scrub and mask. Active ingredients in skincare products are yet not associated with facial acne severity. Keywords: Acne severity, inflammatory facial acne, active ingredients, facial cleansing, facial scrub
