Abstract

Introduction Mental health is a state of well-being in which a person understands their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life and are able to work productively and fruitfully while positive mental health is related to good mental health. Studies of mental health have become more significant with the advance of technology. Mental health applies to all generations from younger to old people. Mental health status can vary depending on stress level and surroundings. Nowadays, mental health, especially positive mental health, has a significant effect on students. Negligence to take further action on mental health can lead to many fatalities which can have effect in the long run. Therefore, it is important to have an assessment on mental health to evaluate positive mental health. 1 Aim This study aims to assess the positive mental health among 4th and 5th year medical students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. It also targets to evaluate the association between the sociodemographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, religion, household income, self income, financial support, living state, relationship status, number of siblings and previous school type) and the positive mental health among 4th and 5th year medical students. Methodology A cross sectional study on simple random sampling was conducted on 4th and 5th year medical students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Self administered questionnaires have been distributed online to each respondent based on the 47 item PMH instrument. The questionnaires also adopted and have been revalidated. Then, they have been reevaluated for its reliability and content validity. The PMH instrument focuses on assessing six domains of mental health which are general coping (GC) 9 items, emotional support (ES) 7 items, spirituality 7 items, interpersonal skills (IS) 9 items, personal growth and autonomy (PGA) 10 items, and global affect (GA) 5 items, and sociodemographic characteristics. Results There were a total of 179 respondents among 4th and 5th year medical students in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) including 98 Malay (54.7%), 43 Chinese (24.0%), 35 Indian (19.6%), 1 Kadazandusun (0.6%) and 2 Iban (1.1%), consented and returned completed questionnaires with 90.86% response rate. Ethnicity, religion, living state and relationship status were significantly associated with total PMH scores as well as six domain specific scores. Gender, household income, self income, financial support, number of siblings and previous school type were not significant with all scores. 2 Conclusion This study showed there was an association between ethnicity, religion, living state, relationship status with positive mental health among 4th and 5th year medical students in UPM. However, gender, household income, self income, financial support, number of siblings, previous school type had no association with positive mental health among the population.
