Abstract
Introduction: The overall national prevalence of hypertension was 35. 3% among adults 18 years and above. Diagnosis most of the time depends on medical based students and staff which could lead to higher detection rates and thereby reduced complications. Hence, this research was to assess knowledge, attitude, practice and awareness of hypertension and its complications among students and staff in the faculty of medicine and health sciences, University Putra Malaysia. Materials and Method: A cross sectional study design was used for this studied that was conducted among undergraduate students and staff in the faculty of medicine and health sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia to assess the association between sociodemographic factors of the participants with leveled of knowledge, attitude, practiced and awareness of hypertension and its complication. The participants for this study were selected via simple random sampling. This research instrument was an online questionnaire that consisted of four sections capturing information on:(1) socio-demographic data ; (2) level of knowledge (3) level of attitude (4) level of practice (5)level of awareness of hypertension and its complications among students and staff. The data was analysed used the statistical package for social sciences program (spss v25. 0) Result : Based on the 383 respondents, the median ( IQ ) age for students was 21 +/- 2 years. The median (IQ) age for staff was 42.7 +/- 7.2 years. The majority of respondents for both students and staff were female. For students, the majority of respondents were pursuing medicine i.e. 106 (34.4 %), and in the second year study i.e. 127 (41.2 %) and with a family history of hypertension, i.e. 171 (55.5 %).For staff, majority of respondents were from tertiary educational level, i.e. 73(97.3%), academic staffs i.e. 60 (80%)and also with a family history of hypertension, i.e. 61 (81.3%).Majority of students have a good knowledge level (n=258,83.3%) , good attitude level (n=281, 91.2 %) , low practice level (n=157,51.0%) and good awareness level (n=260,84.4%) in univariate analysis. Majority of staff have a good knowledge level (n=70,93.3%) ,good attitude level (n=74,98.7%) , good practice level (n=49, 65.3%) and good awareness level 73 (97.3%) in univariate analysis. Female students had a better attitude towards hypertension and its complications and this association was found to be statistically significant (p= 0.01).Those pursuing biomedical courses were found to have better awareness towards hypertension and its complications and this association was found to be statistically significant (p = 0.036). Conclusion : Majority of students had a high level of knowledge, attitude and awareness towards hypertension and its complications but were lacking in actual practice. Meanwhile the majority of staff had a good knowledge, attitude , practice and awareness towards hypertension and its complications. Steps 2 should been taken to addressed this disparity to ensure competent and well prepared future health professionals 3
