Abstract

Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic coupled with the lifestyle changes has intensified the volume of plastic waste in many countries. These include the disposal of plastic-based personal protective equipment (PPEs) and other single-use plastics (SUPs) such as plastic bags, plastic containers, and many more. Due to this fact, the complexities of plastic waste compositions during this pandemic had caused the difficulties to be managed effectively. The plastic consumption and management patterns of youths as well as their KAP levels towards this issue are not well studied in Malaysia. Objectives: Therefore, this study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) level on plastic usage and management among youths during the pandemic. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 344 youths in Klang valley using a self-administered questionnaire on the level of KAP that was distributed via the online platform. Results were analyzed using SPSS. Results and Discussion: The major sources of plastic wastes during the Covid-19 pandemic were PPEs usage (77.3%), online shopping (68.9%), and food delivery packaging (68.9%). The majority of the respondents also disposed of the PPE and other SUP together with the mixed waste in the general dustbin, except for plastic bags where most of them chose to reuse it. A higher percentage of youths obtained a moderate level of knowledge (52%), good level of attitude (61.3%), and fair practice (55.2%) on plastic usage and management. The knowledge score was significantly different by age, marital status, and education level, while the attitude score was significantly different by educational level only. The knowledge level was associated with age groups and educational level, while the attitude was associated with educational level. This study found a significant association between attitude-practice and knowledgeattitude at p<0.05. Conclusion: The youth have a moderate level of knowledge on plastic usage and management. This has significantly influenced their level of attitude and fair practice. Keywords: KAP, plastics, youths, Covid-19 pandemic, Klang Valley
