Abstract
Introduction: Mental health is one of the global issues. To this date, Malaysia records increasing cases of mental health conditions and it involves every generation regardless of the sociodemographic such as living income. Malaysia consist of three classifications of income, i.e. Bottom 40% (B40), Middle 40% (M40) and Top 20% (T20). Among these 3 categories, B40 population which define those who have income less than RM4850 is more susceptible to psychological distress as compared to others. This condition is alarming as it could cause severe circumstances and lead to death. Therefore, study on positive mental health is important to develop a preventive measure in avoiding mental health issues in this population. The aim of this study is to describe the sociodemographic characteristics, positive mental health, general coping mechanism and accessing factors associated with positive mental health among B40 population in Malaysia specifically in Public Work Department Quarters, Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur. Methodology: A cross sectional study based on cluster random sampling was conducted among residents aged 18 years old and above, residing in Public Work Department Quarters, Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala iii Lumpur. Data was collected using the 47-item positive mental health instrument (PMH-I) assessing on six domains of mental health which are general coping (GC, 9 items), emotional support (ES, 7 items), spirituality (7items), interpersonal skills (IS, 9 items), personal growth and autonomy (PGA, 10 items),and global affect (GA, 5 items), as well as sociodemographic data of individuals with self-administered questionnaire. All data collected was analysed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26.0, involving descriptive analyses and statistical tests such as Kruskal Wallis test and Spearman’s correlation test for association. Results: There were a total of 147 eligible respondents residing in Public Work Department Quarters, Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur including 135 Malay (91.8%), 5 Chinese (3.4%) and 7 Indian (4.8%), consented and returned completed questionnaires (86% response rate). There were significant correlations observed in total PMH and domain specific scores across sociodemographic characteristics. Age, gender, ethnicity and religion were significantly associated with total positive mental health (PMH) scores as well as mixed domain specific scores. Educational level was only associated with IS and PGA, while household income and marital status were not significant with all scores. It was found that gender, ethnicity and religion had association with positive mental health, in which the p-value is less than 0.05 (p=0.04). Conclusion: These study revealed that positive mental health had association with gender, ethnicity and religion. However, age, educational level, household income and marital status were not associated with positive mental health among the B40 population in Public Work Department Quarters, Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.
