Abstract
Introduction: World Health Organization stated that mental illness is one of the 5 leading diseases among the age 15-29 years old that causes disability around the world and expect it to be second in the year 2020. However, disclosing mental health problem in Malaysia is not yet fully accepted as it is considered as a weakness. Considering the fact that mental illness is one of the biggest threats to mostly young adults, hence the reinforcement on the importance of early diagnosis of the disease so treatment can be given accordingly. Objective: To determine the perception of mental illness and reasons not to seek help. Methods: This study’s design is a cross-sectional study. A Random sampling method will be used to recruit the students of Universiti Putra Malaysian and data were collected online using Google Form. SPSS version 22 will be used for data entry and analysis. Determining perception towards mental illness and reason not to seek help will be analysed using Pearson correlation, independent t-test, and one-way independent ANOVA according to the data’s nature. Results: A total of 204 respondents had participated in the study. The findings in this study showed that the mean ± SD for a total score of perception towards mental illness is 52.05 ± 9.49 while the mean ± SD for a total score of reasons not to seek help is 22.97 ± 3.89 respectively. Analysis done had revealed that there is a significant perception towards mental illness and reasons not to seek help (p=0.014). The analysis also showed a significant association between gender and perception towards mental illness (p=0.002). Also, a significant relationship between religion and reason not to seek help is found (p=0.0048). Conclusion: Perception towards mental illness and reason not to seek help were found to be correspond with each other. In addition, socio-demographic characteristics such as gender and religion also influenced the perception towards mental illness and reason not to seek help. In conclusion, it’s crucial to educate people especially young adults on mental illness, which will reduce negative perception towards mental illness and barriers of help seeking.
