Abstract

Background: Compassion fatigue is a stress due to prolonged exposure to patients or clients experiencing trauma and distress among health care professionals, including nurses. The high stress may lead to changes in one’s eating behaviour. Altered eating behaviour during an episode of stress can affect the body mass index of individuals either overweight or underweight, which may increase the risk of many health conditions later on. Objectives: To determine the association between compassion fatigue and eating behaviour among female ward nurses. Methodology: This study using a cross sectional design with self-administrated questionnaires that consist of Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) as a main instrument in this study. Participants will be selected by using stratified random sampling method and the total of 222 participants among female nurses will be acquired to answer the questionnaires. All data collected will be analyzed in SPSS 22 software. Descriptive statistics will use to analyze socio- demographic data and determinant of CF and eating behavior. Pearson Chi-Square is used to determine the association between compassion fatigue and eating behaviour among female nurses. Results and discussion: 222 respondents had participated in this study. The findings showed that there was statistically significant association between eating behavior and CF where for emotional eating and restraint eating both p value is p=0.006 and p=0.000 while there is no significant association between CF and external eating. Conclusion: From the research, it shows that there was an association between CF and eating behavior among female ward nurses in a tertiary hospital.
