Abstract

Introduction: Malaysia declared a Movement Control Order (MCO) in response to the global outbreak of COVID-19, which was followed by a National Recovery Plan (NRP). People were advised to stay at home as a result of the movement restrictions in order to reduce the risk of infection. Restriction, on the other hand, has led to development and increased negative behaviour, such as increased tobacco consumption. As a result, it poses a significant threat to housewives, who spend the majority of their time at home. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms occurrence related to household Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure among Malaysian housewives during the National Recovery Plan of COVID-19. We assessed the relationship between ETS exposure and the occurrence of acute respiratory symptoms during NRP among housewives. Methodology: We performed a cross-sectional analysis on Environmental tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure, respiratory symptoms and the other factors related among 332 Malaysian housewives during National Recovery Plan (NRP) COVID-19. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure and respiratory symptoms were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire was modified and adopted from previous studies that was related to ETS and respiratory symptoms. The questionnaire was classified into sociodemographic, Indoor Air Quality, self-reported ETS exposure, and respiratory symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression and chi- square were used to identify the presence and strength of association between factors related and respiratory symptoms. Result and Discussion: High prevalence (88.9%) of respiratory symptoms were recorded among Malaysian housewives during the NRP period. Age (p = 0.001), home-based business housewives (p = 0.009), presence of mold (p = 0.036), household ETS exposure (p = 0.047), living with smokers that smoked inside and outside of the house (p = 0.022), and smoking husband (p = 0.011) were significantly associated with respiratory symptoms among housewives. Our study found that ETS exposure is associated with self-reported breathlessness (p <0.001), sputum production (p = 0.001), and cough (p = 0.003). Conclusion: The household Environmental Tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure is associated with respiratory symptoms associated with among Malaysian housewives during National Recovery Plan (NRP) COVID-19. Thus, development of policy and action plans need to be highlighted and emphasized to increase the awareness of ETS in order to reduce ETS exposure as well as to reduce the possibilities of developing respiratory related illness among other household members.
