Abstract

Introduction: Community perception on the quality of nursing care is part of the overall satisfaction of the hospital setting because most healthcare professionals who attend the patients are nurses. Community perception on the quality of nursing care refers to their experiences and views in receiving care services during past hospitalization. Their perception is crucial because it reflects on the effectiveness of nursing care provided. This study will help in evaluating the community perception on the quality of nursing care between government and private hospitals in Malaysia. Objective: To evaluate the community perception on the quality of nursing care between government and private hospitals in Malaysia. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a non-probability convenience sampling method was used in this study. A self-administered questionnaire; Sharma’s Patient Satisfaction Measurement (SPSM) Scale was used to collect data. SPSS Version 20.0 was used to analyze the data. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the descriptive data and independent T-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used for inferential data analysis. Results: The results showed that quality of nursing care that provided in private hospital was better as compared to the government hospital with the mean total score of 15.91±2.95 to 17.81±2.25 and 15.18± 3.40 to 15.79±3.73 respectively. This was also proved with the number of respondents (118(96.7%)) who will suggest the private hospital to others which were higher than the number who will suggest the government hospital (110(83.3%)). Only the duration of hospitalization (p=.00), status (p=.01), financing (p=.00), gender (p=.02) and education level (p=.01) have a significant relationship with community perception on the quality of nursing care between government and private hospitals in Malaysia. Conclusion: The findings of this study assisted in the evaluation of the quality of nursing care and disclosed which hospital provides better nursing care according to community perception. In this study, even though the respondents are more from the government hospitals compared to private hospitals it is still showed that the respondents from the private hospital have a high perception towards the quality of nursing care. Therefore, the nurses should be more aware of the community's perception and needs. Nurses should maintain the quality of nursing care in both government and private hospitals.
