Abstract
Introduction: Fluoride is an element that can be found naturally in Earth’s crust. The exposure to fluoride is mostly contributed through ingestion in drinking water. Through the excessive or lack of exposure of fluoride, the health of a population can be impacted. The excessive exposure causes dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, thyroid gland secretion problem, neural development problem, and insulin secretion problem. Meanwhile, the lack of exposure causes tooth decay and dental caries. Determining the knowledge and perception of fluoride among the Subang Jaya population was the objective to be achieved. Methodology: Respondents were distributed a questionnaire consisting three sections which were sociodemographic information, knowledge of fluoride, and perception of fluoride. The level of knowledge and perception is obtained by calculating the scores to each section and calculating the percentage of the scores, categorising respondents into different levels from Very Low to Very High. Results: Respondents obtained a significant association (p<0.05) for the association between gender and knowledge level and between education level and knowledge level. Also, a significant association was shown between gender and perception level. Conclusion: Most of the population in Subang Jaya, Selangor had Medium level of both knowledge and perception of fluoride in drinking water. Further studies are recommended to include other factors affecting the knowledge and perception of fluoride in drinking water.
