Abstract

Introduction: Jaundice in newborn is a condition of the baby presenting yellowish discoloration of skin and eye during their first week of life because the bilirubin is buildup in the blood due to immature liver. The primary responsibility toward care of jaundice in newborn is completely to the parents after discharge from the hospital where they be the one to recognize, response and provide appropriate treatment if any abnormality occur. Newborn morbidity and mortality is preventable when the jaundice is manageable with adequate awareness, knowledge and appropriate intervention. Objective: To determine the association between the level of knowledge and awareness on care of jaundice in newborns with the type of treatment selected among parents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 250 respondents from a community in Seremban. The respondents were asked to answer an online questionnaire regarding neonatal jaundice. Spearman correlation, Kruskal Wallis H test and Pearson chi-square were used to evaluate the resulting data. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 36.48±12.2 years old, 41.7% (58) were male, 58.3% (81) were female, 56.1% (78) were Malay, 24.5% (34) were Chinese, 16.5% (23) were Indian and 2.9% (4) others ethnic. About 56.8% (79) of the respondent were having excellent knowledge while 38.8% (54) having average knowledge and 4.3% (6) having limited knowledge. Meanwhile, 97.1% (135) and 2.9% (4) of the respondent had satisfactory awareness and unsatisfactory awareness respectively. There is no significant relationship between knowledge and awareness with the type of treatment selected on jaundice in newborn (p=0.733). However, the excellent knowledge was achieved by the total of 56.8% respondents with satisfactory awareness related with type of treatment selected by the total of 55.4%. Conclusion: Majority respondents had excellent knowledge, sufficient awareness and good in selected proper type of treatment to the newborn with jaundice. Even though the result shows positive towards the community, the health education to recognize, prevent and manage the jaundice should be improved to enhance the knowledge and awareness among them.
